5 Sikh Seva Projects
- Coventry Sikh Camps Organisation We want
to establish a group of responsible people to regularly arrange and run
Sikh camps in Coventry. Sikh camps will encourage and inspire youngsters
into Sikhi with a combination of Sikh education and enjoyable activities
over a number of full days, namely weekends and public holidays.
This could be held at Gurdwara's with trips/excursions
to sports centres or outward bound centres. Activities could include netball,
football, hockey, archery, survival skills, trampolining, horse riding,
sava raksha, ayruvedic medicine, Sikhi discussion forums (inc Q&A sessions),
kirtan/music sessions, simran (with Eng translations), Gurbani, quizzes
and competitions. Resources should be available; we just need volunteers
to come forward, initiate and participate. The aim will be spirituality
and fun. Use the contact button at the top of the page and
title your email ‘Sikh Camps’ or meet us on our open days (TBD). All are
welcome to join.
- Action groups We want to set up independent
action group to help tackle the problems young sikhs are facing in Coventry
today. This is imperative as youngsters are the future of Sikhi and we
must start suppoerting them NOW. We want this group to undertake a needs
analysis of young Sikhs in Coventry and analyse their problems e.g. loss
of faith/identity, bullying, attacks on Sikhs, smoking, drugs, alcohol
abuse, crime, lack of Sikh education, apathy and unity. Then quantify the
size and cause of the problem with the use of questionnaires. We could
then prioritise and tackle each issue accordingly.
Maybe support from Sikh advisory council groups
will be available. We have the support of the Gurdwaras in Coventry and
resources should be available. We are looking for commited people from
all backgrounds, with varying skills to best represent the Sikh community
of Coventry.
Use the contact button at the top of the page and
title your email ‘Action groups' or meet us on our open days (TBD). All
are welcome to join.
- Coventry Sikh Women’s Organisation We would
like to set-up an independent, Sikh Womens organisation, to have a voice
within the community, tackle issues and setup facilities (e.g. womens discussion
groups, womens sports teams, good health activities, yoga, etc ) for Sikh
women in Coventry. Come and help set up this organisation all types of
women are required from all ages to truly represent the Sikh community,
we have the support of the Gurdwara's in Coventry. We have complied a professional
guidelines document based on modern organisational practices to grow, manage,
coordinate and run this organisation. Support and advice may also be provided
from Sikh
Nari Manch or Sikh
Women.Com once the group is operational.
Use the contact button at the top of the page and
title your email 'Sikh Womens org', or meet us on our open days (TBD).

- Khalsa Self Defence Organisation We want
to get together young Sikhs and help them form an independent Khalsa Self-Defence
Organisation. This will promote self defence/ physical fitness within the
Sikh community. They will arrange either new classes or go as Sikh groups
to various martial arts classes. They will promote females into self defence
and further promote the excellent Sava Raksha and Gatka which is a traditional
Sikh form of self defence currently running in Coventry. SWF has complied
a professional guidelines document to setup, grow and mange this organisation.
All resources, publicity on SWF newsletter,
web-sites (SWF / GNP), Radio Sangat and finance should easily be available.
The Sikh community just needs YOU! Also if you have reached a particular
level in any Martial Arts (Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, grampling, etc) and could
teach classes then please come forward all ages are welcome.

- Unwanted Clothes to Punjab We want to set
up an independent charitable organisation who can initially send unwanted
clothes, toys and shoes to Pingowal institution, Amritsar, Punjab. Pingowal
institution is a leprosy, severely mentally and physically disabled care
centre in Amritsar, well known within the Sikh community. Requests would
be made to the Sikh community using SWF, websites, radio sangat and Gurdwara
announcements. Storage and shipment to the Punjab would then be arranged.
We would like to accomplish this in a professional, fully accountable and
open manner, digital photography of bags here and in Punjab, receipts from
Pingowal institution, possibly with the use of ID codes, videos and MPEGs
all displayed on noticeboards and web-sites.
We have had interest from a Sikh charity - Fateh
World, however we need local people from any background to support
us. We are looking to send hundreds of bags, but cannot accomplish this
without YOU. Please make this happen and feel the joy of seva, help the
desperately needy in Punjab.
Secondly to help the needy all over the world
possibly working with Divine
Onkar Mission who help blind, orphans, widows, lepers as well as many
others and have established hospitals, schools, widow ashrams, leper homes,
village wells/water systems and langars for all. Poverty is so bad in
Bihar/Orissa that children who cannot speak a language, are naked and
live in the jungle and eat ants have been captured and bought to the orphanages
(children of people who died of Leprosy with no one to look after them).
Use the contact button at the top of the page and
title your email 'Clothes to Punjab', write to us at our address or meet
us at one of our open days. All are welcome to join.
With Wahegurus blessing and your help, we can
make a difference to thousands of unfortunate people.
We will be holding seminars/stalls/open days
at each Gurdwara where you can meet our Young, Professional and Friendly
team and find out more about these projects if you haven't joined already
by then.
