The latest news out of Belgium is that it has now banned dastar (turban) in its schools. The dastar a key part of the Sikh identity and now realized by France which had recently come to a agreement.
Belgian Sikhs of the Guru Nanak Sikh Society stated that while France enacted a law, imposing a ban on religious symbols in schools, the Belgian schools had now done the same.
They stated that very few schools now allowed Sikh children to wear dastar (turban) in Belgium. “The favourable situation of allowing religious symbols in a few schools there would not sustain for long,” they said.
Appealing to the SGPC in Amritsar Sahib and all world wide Sikh organisations, Belgian Sikhs have said that the issue was not only theirs but was of serious concern to all Sikhs. They urged Sikh organisations to immediately take notice and action so that Sikhs of Belgium would not suffer humiliation and loss of dignity.
It seems that Belgium has enacted the law in quietly and that suddenly now Sikhs are being discriminated against. A Sikh legal plan of action will now be drawn up with in regards to the implications of this new law.
